Entering the Eastern Orthodox Church is a beautiful journey, but new converts and catechumens are often in grave danger if they do not know how to discern a true spiritual father.As more people discover the Orthodox Faith in North America and Western Europe, many find themselves vulnerable to bad actors, real people in physical parishes, as well as online, who appear to be canonical priests, monks, or bishops, but are actually taking advantage of the faithful. In this video, we discuss the severe danger of "guruism" and blind obedience in the Church.Drawing from 2 Corinthians 11 and the teachings of St. John Chrysostom, I share two critical red flags you must look for when choosing a spiritual father or confessor. A true Orthodox priest is not the Physician (Christ is), nor the nurse (the Saints and Angels are). The priest is simply a spiritual paramedic, a fellow patient in the hospital of the Church, leading you toward the King of Kings.
